A little more detail:
An oestradiol (estradiol) test measures the level of oestradiol, a primary form of estrogen, in the blood. Oestradiol is a hormone produced mainly by the ovaries in women, and in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands and testes in men. It plays a key role in reproductive health, regulating the menstrual cycle, and supporting pregnancy in women. In men, it is involved in sperm maturation, although at much lower levels.
In women, oestradiol levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, peaking just before ovulation. Testing oestradiol can help evaluate fertility issues, menstrual irregularities, and the function of the ovaries. High levels of oestradiol may indicate conditions like ovarian tumors or hyperthyroidism, while low levels can signal menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or pituitary disorders.
In men, elevated oestradiol levels might indicate testicular tumors or hormonal imbalances, while low levels could affect sperm production and reproductive health.
The oestradiol test is commonly done via a blood sample and may be ordered along with other hormone tests, such as FSH or LH, for a complete view of hormonal balance. This test is valuable in diagnosing reproductive health issues, assessing puberty onset, and monitoring hormone therapies.
